Green House Effect

ghe shower cap

The “Green House Effect” is all about the sweat. This is the process of wrapping your hair at night in a way that would maximize moisture. This moisture is supposed to grow your hair at an alarming rate. Most women after using this effect have grown their hair about an inch each month. This process allows nightly product retention. You can lookup stories of women who have tried this method on Youtube

So of course this is something everyone should try…

Step1 apply a water and natural oil mixture to your hair (carrot, olive, castor, you choose)

Step2  twist or braid hair (whichever style you want to wear the next day)

Step 3  cover hair with plastic cap (shower cap works fine)

Step 4 cover cap with satin scarf

This should become your nightly routine for about a month or maybe longer. Document your growth, switch oils, get creative, and I  hope this works for you.

Shrinkage Honey

Shrinkage Honey

The stories of shrinkage that i could tell are simply ridiculous. No this picture is not me this is just a dramatic representation and shows why you should not get discouraged if your hair looks short after being washed. You can thank shrinkage for this. Shrinkage actually proves curl strength and health. There are a lot of ways to stretch natural hair without using heat (for those who stay away from heat). Recently, i saw the commercial for a shampoo that does not promote shrinkage you hair is supposed to retain the stretched length. I dont know how well that shampoo works and in my opinion i rather just work with my shrinkage.

The Battle

The Battle

Chris Rock’s documentary “turned up” a lot of discussion. What is good hair? Who has good hair? and what are the extremes that we see no problem with when it comes to hair? His documentary made a lot of women feel uncomfortable with the truths we all live. Most women of color spend a lot of time in our local beauty supplies some even go buy industry sized products for better deals but not all of us think about the fact that there is hardly any black owned hair products. YET, this is an industry that we buy from sometimes everyday. we allow people who dont look like us or realistically are not us to determine what is good. DONT FORGET THIS IS YOUR HAIR THAT IS UP FOR DISCUSSIÒN, and it shouldnt be.

Day to Day Process

I am not going to lie transitioning from permed hair to natural hair is a complete 360 change. Basically you have to forget everything you are used to, throw out products that used to work, and combs that you used to use, and more importanly the idea that your hair may look like you want it to or like your hair icon (we all have one, someone’s hair that convinced you to go natural) truth is we all have different hair textures and live in different regions and weather types. Yes I said regions and weather because these factors do matter. The main point of this post is to tell you how important it is to just get over it…everything, because this may be one of the biggest changes in your life because you are going to have to look at yourself differently, and love what you see.

My Anniversary

This is before my transition the dreaded senior year graduation picture proof

This is before my transition the dreaded senior year graduation picture proof

I guess we should start at the beginning. I started this process march 2012 after having a severe allergic reaction to a box perm (the creamy crack). A box perm of course, is the perm you buy in your beauty Supply that you apply at home by yourself. After wearing my relaxed hair for years and never thinking to do an allergy test while often switching between brands (whichever was more affordable at the time) I was to say the least not careful. So after I cured the rash and hives that I got through the reaction I needed a serious break from the perm scene. I didnt cut it off although I wanted to instead I slowly transitioned my hair from the perm to my natural texture. I actually dont have many pictures of my hair during the process i wore scarves, headbands, and a pony tail basically until all my hair was at its natural state. I was not brave enough to chop it off so i trimmed it off.
